An oil painting by renowned British impressionist Edward Seago is among the key attractions at this year’s Northern Antiques Fair, which returns to Tennants Garden Rooms in Leyburn, North Yorkshire, from Thursday, October 9 to Sunday, October 12.
Now in its fifth year at the venue, the event will feature approximately 40 specialist dealers showcasing fine art and antiques in the garden rooms and cloisters of Tennants. Organizers anticipate another strong turnout following last year’s attendance of around 2,200 visitors over four days.
The fair presents a curated blend of antique and contemporary pieces, including period furniture, oil and watercolour paintings, sculpture, glassware, clocks, silver, jewellery, ceramics, rugs, maps, and other decorative items. Prices range from several hundred pounds to five-figure sums, appealing to both casual buyers and serious collectors.
Among the standout works is The Line of the Dunes by Edward Seago (1910–1974), a leading figure in 20th-century British impressionism. The oil painting is offered by Burlington for £68,500. Additional highlights include a rare 1930 eight-day mantel chronometer by Mercer, priced at £16,500 from Frodsham Clocks, and a watercolour of an Anglesey cottage by Sir Kyffin Williams (1918–2006), listed at £9,500 by Mark Rowles Fine Art.
Historic maps also feature prominently, such as a 1590 edition map of Ireland by Abraham Ortelius, the first cartographer to compile a modern atlas. This item, available from J Dickinson Maps and Prints, is priced at £1,675.
Blackbrook Gallery will present Three Prize Pigs, an oil painting inscribed with the 1860 Birmingham livestock competition results. Bred by Sir George Wombwell, the pigs reportedly sold for £39; the painting is now valued at £11,500.
Yorkshire is represented by an oil painting of Whitby by Henry Redmore (1820–1887), on offer from Ellis Fine Arts for £5,950.
New exhibitors this year include Jeroen Markies Art Deco, Elm Hill Eclectic, Morgan Strickland Decorative Arts, and Mark Rowles Fine Art. Jeroen Markies Art Deco will introduce an immersive room-set display celebrating original 20th-century design.
The fair promises an eclectic international mix, with items ranging from British pottery to Spanish decorative antiques, Scandinavian jewellery, and period glassware.
