Carson City Militaria Shop Preserves Global Wartime History Through Artifacts and Education

CARSON CITY, Nev. – Nestled on North Curry Street in Carson City, Westwall Militaria stands as a unique repository of military history, displaying a broad array of global wartime artifacts that span centuries.

An American flag waves prominently outside the store, symbolizing one of the many nations represented within. While the exterior nods to patriotism, the collection inside encompasses a far wider scope. The shop houses military items from across the globe — American, British, German, Japanese, and others — curated by owner Gary Cain, whose lifelong passion for history began at an early age.

Cain recalls purchasing his first artifact at just eight years old — a distinctive unit insignia from the 101st Airborne Division of World War II — a piece he still owns today. “It was cool,” he reflects, underscoring the lasting fascination that fuels his collection.

Specializing in artifacts from 1975 and earlier, Cain’s shop includes a diverse inventory, from aviation memorabilia to weaponry, uniforms, and even ceremonial swords — some dating as far back as the 1500s. He notes that most combat swords were destroyed in battle, making ceremonial pieces particularly rare.

Among the shop’s most sought-after items are those from the Third Reich. Cain clarifies that the interest in these artifacts stems not from ideological alignment, but from their historical significance and the Allied victory that they represent. “It’s a war trophy,” he explains. “It comes from a very, very long tradition and it is worldwide.”

Westwall Militaria attracts a varied clientele. Visitors range widely in age, background, and nationality. Some are historians; others are simply eager to learn. Whether they leave with a rare piece of history or not, Cain hopes each visitor gains a deeper appreciation for the human experiences behind the artifacts.

“These are real people. They suffered — some of them died — so that we can live the life that we live,” Cain says. “And I don’t want people to forget that. That is the reason why I am here.”

As Cain begins to downsize his collection, he is focused on ensuring these artifacts find the right custodians. He emphasizes that collectors like himself are merely temporary stewards. In time, the medals, helmets, and other items will continue to serve as educational tools, preserving the legacy of sacrifice and the lessons of history for future generations.
