Fort Gibson Community Rallies to Restore Beloved Antique Shop Damaged by Storm

FORT GIBSON, Okla. — A devastating storm that swept through Fort Gibson has left behind more than just debris—it’s also shaken a cornerstone of the town’s historic charm. Granny’s Porch, a well-known antique shop that has operated for 25 years under the care of owner Carol Corley, suffered extensive damage during the storm, particularly to its roof.

The store, known for its overflowing collection of vintage items and local character, now faces a major rebuilding effort. Shingles and roofing materials were strewn across the road in front of the shop, signaling the storm’s severity.

“When we drove into town, I could see the street was just black with my roof,” Corley recalled emotionally. “The whole block was covered with all that black debris. I opened the door and just cried.”

Despite the devastation, Corley is not facing this challenge alone. The Fort Gibson community has quickly mobilized in support. The local American Legion organized a spaghetti dinner fundraiser, drawing dozens of friends and neighbors to aid in the recovery efforts.

“It touched me so much,” Corley said of the turnout. “Why me? Who am I? I’m nobody. I’m just an old woman.” But community members see her differently.

“She’s got a heart of gold,” said Tim Smith of the American Legion. “You go in and buy something from her, and she’ll practically give it to you.”

Corley, a former art teacher at Fort Gibson High School, has long been a fixture in the community. One of her former students from the 1980s, Don Ballew, was among those who came to show support. “She is just a wonderful lady,” Ballew said. “I would do anything I can to help her.”

Granny’s Porch began as a labor of love. Corley purchased the dilapidated building decades ago with the intent to restore it. Now, that restoration must happen again. She remains determined to reopen.

“Oh, absolutely, that’s my baby,” she said.

While the dinner raised hundreds of dollars, the cost to replace the roof is expected to run into the thousands. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist with the necessary repairs.

“That’s the way Fort Gibson is,” said local resident Lonnie Rowan. “It’s a loving community, and it’ll help out whenever needed.”

For Corley, the show of support has been overwhelming. “I’m so glad that all these angels showed up,” she said.

Granny’s Porch, much like its owner, remains a symbol of resilience, community spirit, and enduring small-town charm.
