Antiques Valuation Event at Kington’s Oxford Arms to Support Community Regeneration

by Cecily

Residents of Kington and the surrounding border regions of Herefordshire, Powys, and South Shropshire are being encouraged to search their attics, storerooms, and cupboards for potentially valuable antiques. Experts from Shrewsbury-based Halls Fine Art will be hosting a charity antiques valuation event at the Oxford Arms in Kington on Friday, June 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A professional valuation fee of £2 will be charged per item, with all proceeds donated to Open Arms Kington CIC, a social enterprise dedicated to revitalizing the rural border town.

The valuation team includes Maryanne Lineker-Mobberley, specialist in silver, jewellery, and bijouterie, alongside Alexander Clement, expert in watches, clocks, Asian art, and general valuation. Attendees with large collections or bulky antiques can bring photographs for assessment, with the possibility of arranging follow-up home visits.

Those unable to attend the event but seeking valuations can contact Halls Fine Art at 01743 450700.

Maryanne Lineker-Mobberley expressed enthusiasm about the event, highlighting the excitement of discovering unexpected treasures and the opportunity to support the local social enterprise.

Open Arms Kington CIC purchased The Oxford Arms, a Grade II listed former coaching inn, in 2023, aiming to transform it into a dynamic community hub and pub. While restoration of the historic building is underway, the rear Courtyard and ancient Barn have been repurposed for pop-up events that bring together people of all ages through food, art, music, and more.

In November, the project received a development grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to advance renovation efforts and secure the building’s future. Once completed, The Oxford Arms will operate as a community-owned venue, including a pub, event space, and B&B, with all profits reinvested into local projects.

Essential repairs are currently being carried out to ensure the building’s safety before reopening to the public.
