Mongers Market in Bridgeport Shuts Its Doors After Gaining Regional Fame

by Cecily

Mongers Market, a well-known hub for antiques, vintage goods, and unique collectibles across the Northeast, is closing after just a few years of operation. The market attracted visitors from New York, Providence, and surrounding areas, becoming a beloved destination for enthusiasts of vintage clothes, furniture, artwork, lighting, tools, and other nostalgic items.

Located in a prominent red building visible from I-95 in Bridgeport, Mongers Market offered vendors permanent rental spaces inside a warehouse—providing a welcome alternative to the constant travel flea market sellers often face. Barry Robbins, a longtime vendor specializing in hardware store items such as hammers and measuring tapes, described his immediate connection to the market. “The minute I walked through that door, I said, ‘This is where I want to be,’” Robbins recalled. Now, he expresses deep disappointment at the closure. “I’m heartbroken because this place is magical. There’s no other place like Mongers. It’s incredible,” he said.

Originally planned as a temporary summer closure to address building issues with hopes of reopening in the fall, Mongers Market announced on June 6 via social media that it would not reopen. The statement cited efforts to find a viable path forward but concluded with a difficult decision to close permanently.

Regular customers are equally saddened by the loss. Adriana Rabedeau, who often visited the market for inspiration and unique finds, emphasized the importance of such venues. “These types of places are timeless,” she said. “They’re nostalgic and offer quality items you don’t find in regular stores.” Rabedeau expressed hope that the market might find a new location, noting the challenge of dispersing the large inventory housed in one central spot.

As Mongers Market prepares to close, its absence leaves a gap in the regional vintage and antique community, with both vendors and customers mourning the loss of what many called a “magical” and irreplaceable marketplace.
