BRIMFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Brimfield Antique Flea Market kicked off its opening day on Tuesday, welcoming hundreds of visitors to what is recognized as the oldest and largest outdoor antique show in the United States.
Founded in 1959, the Brimfield Antique Flea Market has become a staple event for collectors from all over the world. Each year, more than 6,000 vendors set up along Route 20, showcasing an array of antiques and collectibles for an estimated 50,000 attendees. From vintage jewelry to classic furniture, the market offers something for every enthusiast. While some visitors come with a specific item in mind, others enjoy browsing the expansive offerings, waiting for something to catch their eye. For many, attending the event has become a cherished tradition, often passed down through generations.
David, a long-time attendee, shared that he has been visiting the market for over two decades. He recalled bringing his children to the event years ago, pulling them in a wagon that he still uses today. “They’re all grown up now, so we just come to enjoy ourselves,” he said.
Richie and Marissa, who travel annually from Long Island, emphasized the diverse range of items on display. “There’s a lot to look at. There are a lot of interesting displays, and people put a lot of effort into it,” they explained, noting that they stay for the full week to take in the experience.
Vendors, who prepare year-round for the event, echoed the dedication required to make the market successful. The Johnson brothers, who source items from yard sales and estate sales, admitted that the process is challenging. “Nine out of 10 times it doesn’t work out, there’s a lot of junk, but one out of ten times you’ll find something like this and you can do pretty good,” they shared.
For many, the market is more than just a shopping experience. Bob Courinoyer, a vendor from Southbridge who has participated for 15 years, believes the nostalgia draws people back year after year. “You see something that reminds you of your parents, your grandparents, aunts, uncles, when you grew up. It brings back good memories,” he said.
The first of the three runs of the Brimfield Antique Flea Market will continue through Sunday. If you miss this event, the market will return in July and September.
